You've probably heard the saying, "they grow up so fast" time and time again. Or, "the days are long, but the years are short". As cliche as it may sound, this is definitely true! I remember wishing for those loooong nights with endless feeds and broken sleep to pass quickly, only to question where the time had gone when my little ones started to walk and talk. That newborn phase is so unique, it's worth being documented. You'll thank yourself later that you have photos of those cute toes and toothless smiles to treasure forever. But when is the best time to book in a photo session with your little one?
How old does my baby need to be for a newborn photo session?
For a newborn photo session, I generally recommend booking a date for when your little one is about 5 to 14 days old. This is for those of you who prefer those sleepy photos where your baby is wrapped up and still a little bundle of joy. Those little toes, that button nose and the sweet small details that make your little one more than perfect. It is of course also totally fine if you prefer having photos taken when your baby is a bit older, say 4 to 6 weeks old (or later). Some parents prefer this as they feel they are more accustomed to their new routine and feel more up to having their photos taken. This is such a special time in your lives and it's up to you when you want to have those memories captured. I'm here when you are ready!
What is the best time to book in a newborn photo session?
As you most likely don't know yet when your little one will be born at the moment you book in (unless you have a planned c-section), I will note down your due date and ask you to contact me as soon as you can after your baby's birth so we can set a date for the newborn photo session. I have some weekdays reserved for newborn sessions as well as weekend availability, so we can definitely find a time to do the newborn session when it best suits you and your family. I can come to your home, or we can go to an outdoor location (or both) - whatever you prefer!
If you prefer taking photos of your little one when they are a bit older, you can also contact me after the birth to book in a date. You only have to keep in mind that I generally book out 1 to 2 months in advance, so I'd recommend not waiting too long.
What is the best time of day to book in a newborn photo session?
What time works best for a newborn photo session heavily depends on you and your baby. You might find that they are more settled in the morning or perhaps they sleep better in the afternoon. Or, if your baby has an older brother or sister, you might prefer to book in the morning hours in order to avoid their crankiness later in the afternoon. I'm here to work with you and your schedule, so we will find a time that suits you and your family best.
And don't worry, I never book in another session after a newborn session, so there's no rush. Don't panic if your newborn needs a feed during our session or takes a while to settle. I will be there to take photos as long as necessary and I'm not in any rush, so please don't feel like we need to stick to the allotted time if it doesn't work out. I've been through the newborn stage twice, so I know that newborns don't adhere to a set schedule. My aim is to make your newborn photo session as relaxed and enjoyable as I can.
